    With Marikina crowned as the heart and the shoe capital of the Philippines, how <\/span>did <\/span>the industry <\/span>build <\/span>its own identity? Since Kapitan Moy has introduced the now well-known artistry in the shoemaking industry of Marikina, the shoemaking community helped define the city\u2019s pride and reputation.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The title is not just seen in the perspective of the nation\u2019s economy but rather it reflects a cultural identity shaped by Kapitan Moy who introduced shoemaking in the late 19th century. <\/span>For Marikenos of many generations, shoemaking is the foundation of their story and culture, representative of their inheritance and skills. <\/span> The <\/span>efforts in<\/span> transferring craftsmanship shows how a culture is sustained, where each generation does not only learn a trade, <\/span>but <\/span>inherits a sense of identity and pride that is already ingrained in their life. In this way, shoemaking works as both livelihood and cultural glue to their identity and <\/span>generations<\/span>, joining Marikenos together<\/span> over time<\/span>. This legacy became more than an industry, but it became an identity.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Along with what was built, as stated by Rahaza Fashion and supported by Mr. Dennis Caballes from OTTO Shoes; one of the interviewees, Marikina also shows how the community continues to celebrate the heritage which strengthens the tradition and value of shoemaking through annual festivities such as the Sapatos Festival that occurs annually where tradition and the community converge, bridging each generation as they witness the story of the craft. These festivities are not only a cultural celebration but it is also a tool for the economy to attract visitors, reinforcing Marikina\u2019s identity in the national consciousness by maximizing the reach of the craft towards the public and other opportunities. Institutions like the Marikina Shoe Museum that was opened in the year 2001 of February 16th to further preserve this heritage according to Ms. Judy Camer; Venue Manager of Marikina Shoe Museum, showcasing almost 800 pairs of Imelda Marcos\u2019s shoes\u2013a testament of Marikina\u2019s global recognition, where in her time\u2013the industry holds the spotlight of the global market and is known as the core of world-class shoemaking. <\/span>Every <\/span>pair of shoes that are made in Marikina that were formerly owned by prominent personalities are all displayed to show how Marikina\u2019s shoemaking industry actually built the foundation not only their title as the Shoe Capital of the Philippines but also as one of the cities that continuously bring the cultural pride and identity of the known legacy.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Despite the challenges the industry has faced\u2014global competitions in the market like China where they can mass produce different pair of shoes, pandemic and lockdowns that forced more of artisans to close and the advancement of technology that pushed them to sell online knowing its barriers\u2013Marikina\u2019s shoemakers\u2019 resilience are unbreakable. As stated by Kuya Pando also known as Fernando Lopez, also added that the lack of materials or resources is another challenge as a shoe artisan where most of their materials are imported, hindering them to finish a shoe in a matter of time or change the material that is lacking. In recent years, collaborations with local fashion businesses and the use of online platforms and marketplaces have allowed the artisans to share and reach audiences far beyond Markina. According from Mr. Noel Evangelista, there are competitions that are being made from the DTI where they also take part to promote their brand, also helping other companies and stores an opportunity to be recognized in the industry. The artisans have learned to adapt with the continuously evolving trends, such as promoting and selling their products online according to Philstar that also helped them to have sales despite the advancements.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0From its humble beginnings through its today’s resilience, the Marikina shoemaking industry still stands as more than an industry\u2013it is a living heritage. Looking ahead, the challenge lies in balancing tradition with innovation that is now being applied by the shoemakers or artisans themselves, ensuring that Marikina\u2019s shoemaking heritage remains relevant in the rapidly changing fashion landscape. Its<\/span> cultural identity and significance<\/span> lies in the pride and identity that has shaped the Marike\u00f1os, while its impact continues to ripple across generations, festivals, and fashion. What began as a local trade became a shaping legacy that continuously inspired the artisans and fashion trend in the modern times\u2013keeping Marikina’s culture and identity alive.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
